The Mathematics of Harmony: from Euclid to Contemporary Mathematics and Computer Science, которую Международное изд-во «World Scientific” планирует опубликовать летом 2009 г.
I am writing this in honor of my good friend and colleague, Professor Alexey Stakhov, on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Born and raised in the Ukraine, Alexey now lives with his wife Antonina and his children and grandchildren in Toronto, Canada. An absolute genius in both the foundational principles and practical applications of mathematics, he was instrumental in the some of the former Soviet Union’s most profound scientific developments and patents. An outstanding and tireless researcher, brilliant writer, and excellent scholar, Alexey is also a true friend. Over the years he has exhibited superb research skills, organizational abilities and real leadership, at one time overseeing over sixty scientists in the soviet space program. He exudes the highest degree of professionalism, an intense will to succeed, and most importantly, a wonderfully creative and probing mind.
I first became aware of Alexey’s work through his website, The Golden Museum. I was absolutely astonished, as have been so many others, by what I found on this site. I immediately made my visit to Toronto. What I found there was a warm, gracious, humble individual who may well know more about the fundamental mathematical intricacies of Nature and the Cosmos itself, than anyone else in the world. Now for the past two years I have worked very closely with him, editing his book, The Mathematics of Harmony: from Euclid to Contemporary Mathematics and Computer Science, scheduled for publication by World Scientific later this summer in 2009. Some of us are convinced that his insights in this work are so remarkable, that it may well change not only the way we view the history of mathematics, but the future development of mathematics in its applications to the natural sciences. In particular, I have found that Professor Stakhov’s knowledge of the Golden Section in both its intricacies and ramifications for the natural sciences is the actual state of the art in academia. I know this because I have researched the subject for over 35 years, and in 2006 published the award winning book, The Golden Section: Nature’s Greatest Secret.
What some of us now realize, is that the Golden Section and its expression through Fibonacci and Lucas numbers (Binet formulas) lies at the very center of the creative principles of Nature itself. Already scientists and friends of Professor Stakhov, like M.S. El Naschie (twice nominated for the Nobel prize), are solving some of the most intractable puzzles of physics and the quantization of space-time, reconciling Quantum Mechanics and Relativity Theory through an application of the Golden Section to the inherent paradoxes and dilemmas of physics. Scientists and philosophers are realizing that the Golden Section holds the key to the structure of DNA, genetics, nanotechnology, the treatment of the HIV virus, quarks, the structure of subatomic particles, the quantum computer, cryptography, the morphology of animals, phyllotaxis (leaf arrangement) of plants, atmospheric turbulence (including cyclones, tornadoes and hurricanes), metallurgy, the underlying principles of harmony, resonance, attunement and aesthetics, and the cosmogenesis of the very Universe itself. Scholars like Sir Roger Penrose and Stuart Hammeroff, in their search for the quantum mechanics of consciousness came to the discovery that it is connected with the Golden Section and Fibonacci numbers. We are presently on the verge of discovering the very nature of the role, which the Golden Section plays in the transformation of consciousness. And as a consequence, we may in fact be about to discover the underlying principles of education and information transmission itself, far beyond anything we ever dreamed.
Roger Penrose
And it is the Golden Section and its attendant expressions through Fibonacci and Lucas numbers that are at the heart of these discoveries. And who is it that understands this driving principle behind all of Nature, perhaps better than anyone else alive? It is Alexey Stakhov! His new book, The Mathematics of Harmony, may well change the course of human history. No mathematical mind today, in my humble estimation, can match the depth, breadth of scope, and creativity of Alexey Stakhov. As it turns out, these recent scientific developments in physics, cosmology, mathematics, aesthetics, nanotechnology, computer programming and design, artificial intelligence, and biology, have refocused attention on a revival of interest in ancient Pythagorean ideas about the numerical harmonics of the Universe, including both its macrocosmic and microcosmic levels. Thus a door has been opened wide inviting a fundamental reassessment of Plato’s Cosmology, Euclid’s Elements and the very history and future development of mathematics itself. These developments in contemporary science have once again centered attention upon the works of these great Greek scientists and philosophers as a continuing source for new scientific ideas and discoveries. For example, work by Dan Shectman in crystallography led to the important discovery of quasi-crystals based upon the icosahedron, one of the Platonic solids. Robert Curl, Harold Kroto and Richard Smalley discovered a new form of carbon, carbon 60, based upon the truncated icosahedron, or Buckminster fullerene. This discovery led to the 1996 Nobel Prize in chemistry for Curl, Kroto and Smalley. Along with several similar discoveries, it provoked a reexamination of the role played by what appears to be Nature’s primary organizing principle, the Golden Section (also referred to as the Golden Ratio, Golden Mean, or Divine Proportion). Sergey Petoukhov even demonstrated that the Golden Mean underlies the genetic code itself! And there is no one alive in the world today who understands more fully the real nature and possibilities of the Golden Mean, than Professor Alexey Stakhov.
Professor Stakhov was in fact the first to propose the concept of Harmony Mathematics as a new interdisciplinary direction for modern science. His knowledge and expertise in this area has deep connections to contemporary mathematics, theoretical physics and computer science. Furthermore, his forthcoming book, The Mathematics of Harmony, has a direct relation to mathematical education and is a strong and viable source for the reform of modern education in mathematics. Professor Stakhov’s insights in forthcoming book are stunning. He has been working on the generalization of the Golden Section, Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, and the Binet formulas, developing new and very accurate hyperbolic models of Nature. Developing new theories of coding and cryptography, a ternary mirror-symmetrical arithmetic, and number systems with irrational radices, Professor Stakhov was recently honored by the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences with their highest award for outstanding service. He has been presented with the Honorary Diploma & Medal: “Knight of Science & Arts.” Our hats are off to our most deserving colleague, Professor Alexey Stakhov. `
